I would like to introduce you to David Smith Construction, Inc. and give a brief history of David Smith Construction, Inc. and it’s founder/owner, David Smith. David was born and raised in the small town of Weir,MS. He was raised along with three sisters by his parents, Marvin and Mary Smith. David attended school at Weir Attendance Center, where he graduated in 1972.

While in attendance, he lettered in football, basketball, and track & field. Growing up, as all young men in his area did, David worked in the timber business when schooling allowed him to, then started taking an interest in the construction industry through his connections with his father (a craftsman painter) and his uncle (a skilled carpenter and home builder). As time passed, his love for construction grew and blossomed into a desire to build. He worked summers for Gary Oswalt Construction, and part time/weekend jobs for Hughes Construction.

Upon graduating from Weir Attendance Center, he attended Holmes Community College in Goodman MS, and graduated in Building Construction Technologies. While in attendance at Holmes, he met his soon to be wife, Donna. They married in 1975 and moved to Inverness.

Why Inverness, some ask; because she was promised a job at V&M Cotton Co. as a data programming software designer if she graduated from Holmes by way of a co-op program. As David has said many times, that was a dream come true for the newlyweds. Upon arriving in the Mississippi Delta from the Hill Country as his friends call it, David started out taking jobs as handyman of sorts, doing odd jobs for different customers and trying to raise his first born child.

Through word of mouth, a builder named Elton Lloyd heard of his work ethic and reached out to him. David and Elton, who was some years older and more of the experienced name of the pair, partnered up and began building custom homes together.

This partnership lasted several years, but eventually David wanted to get into the commercial construction industry while Elton wished to stay residential. They remained good friends for many years until Elton passed away. David learned much from his time spent with Elton, and values the memories and knowledge imparted. In 1991, Smith Construction Company was opened and David started on his own journey.

Between helping his wife with raising two children by this time (Brady and Martin Smith) and managing his own company, David had his hands full. But never one to shy away from hard work, he gladly took this responsibility and nurtured both the growing business and the growing family. With a reputation that had grown over the years for doing first class construction, David’s business thrived. He knew this was what he had dreamed of doing, and in 1995 he incorporated and became David Smith Construction, Inc..

What started out as a contracting company in a small one room office space with two desks (one for a secretary and one for his night work estimating projects) has grown into a successful commercial construction company, and a recognizable name in the local industry. In 1999, David’s eldest son Brady joined the firm, though in 2010 he was asked to take over the the Smith family’s other enterprise, and began managing Sunflower Lumber and Home Center, which David purchased in 1999. Martin joined David Smith Construction in 2002, and quickly began learning from his father how to build and also how to operate a business.
